I'd recommended you hire a car and visit Shaxi village. It's across the boarder in dali, 3hr drive. Beautiful. Also wenhai village near Lijiang is also quite pretty. Hike up there for a day trip. I've got another question related to the tourist crowds- we will be in Yunnan from April 30th until May 4th, flying into Lijiang from Shanghai. I know you recommend not traveling in China during this time, but somehow we are going there.
